Great theatre enables actors and audiences to feel what the character experiences. That premise is what motivated adjunct professor Jaime Estades (bio) to write the play Five Sessions, depicting a fictional social worker who is a white woman providing clinical services to a Latino man. In this episode of Social Impact LIVE, host Richard Hara (bio) sits down with Estades and two other leading educators he collaborated with—Dr. Ovita Williams (bio) and Ericka Echavarria, LMSW, JD (bio)—to discuss their efforts to design an innovative learning experience that uses Estades’ play to teach second-year MSW students about racial justice and social work practice. The course, which has received support from Columbia’s Provost Office, is titled “Five Sessions: Practice Dynamics of Power, Race, Oppression, and Privilege through Simulation-Based Learning.”
